Social Stories for Autism: What They Are and How to Use Them

If your child is autistic, you've probably heard of social stories. They're one of the most widely used tools by therapists and families to prepare children for new or difficult situations. This guide explains what they are, why they work, and how to create one step by step.

What is a social story?

A social story is a short, personalized, descriptive narrative that explains a specific situation —going to the dentist, starting school, waiting for a turn— from the child's point of view. The method was developed by Carol Gray in 1991 and today also draws on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for children.

Unlike a traditional storybook, a social story isn't meant to entertain: it's meant to anticipate what will happen, describe the emotions that may come up, and offer simple strategies to cope with them.

Why they help neurodivergent children

  • They reduce anxiety about the unknown: knowing what to expect feels safe.
  • They build a "mental map": the child rehearses the situation before living it.
  • They model emotional regulation: breathe, count, ask for help.
  • They can be re-read: repetition consolidates the learning.

How to write a social story step by step

  1. Pick a single situation. The more concrete, the better: "My first time at the barber shop".
  2. Describe it positively and in the first person. "When I arrive, I sit in a big chair".
  3. Include the sensations. "Sometimes the clippers make a buzzing sound. I can cover my ears if I need to".
  4. Offer a strategy. "If I feel nervous, I take three slow breaths".
  5. Close calmly. "When I'm done, mom gives me a hug. I did it!".

The power of personalization

A social story works far better when the main character is your own child: their name, their family, their bedroom. Seeing themselves inside the story boosts attention and emotional connection.

Writing and illustrating each story by hand takes time, which is why many families never cover all the situations they need. With NeuroStories you can create personalized stories starring your child in under a minute, with unique illustrations on every page.
